If you listen to the CBC you already know this, but it bears repeating that the ancient Egyptians were the first ones onto the prosthetic toe. Biomedical Egyptologists from the University of Manchester have recently recreated and tested working protheses based on two prototypes, the oldest of which dates from before 600 BC. The designs differ slightly, the first being made of a paper-mache and the second of wood or hardened leather. Contemporary volunteers have tried both, but find the second model particularly comfortable. If you're interested, here's an article with even more details:
